Fairy Hollow - August KOM OTP

It's the kit of the month reveal day at Flying Unicorn! Be sure to check out our August Your Passion, Your Art kit and add ons - they sell out quickly.

I love that you can take the Flying Unicorn's monthly Off-The-Page projects in so many directions creatively. With some, I know as soon as they come out of the box what I want to do with them. With others, I take them out and leave them on my desk and stare at them for awhile while the ideas percolate. With this month's metal lantern and the Prima fairy resins I knew the direction that I wanted to take as soon as it came out of the box.

I love the look of fairy gardens, but I don't have much of a green thumb, so I decided to craft my own fairy garden that doesn't need any maintenance with some figurines from my local gardening store.

I prepped the exterior of the lantern with clear gesso to ensure my paint would stick to it, then added Distress Paint and Distress Crackle Paint for a bit or a worn, woodsy feel.

Some glass pebbles for a little stream...

A crumpled paper bag coloured with Color Bloom sprays and chalk ink...

And some of the Magnolia crystals dangling from the magical little tree to finish it off.

Thank you for stopping by today!

Sketchabilities Guest Designer - Sketch 120

The Flying Unicorn Creative Team are guest designers for Sketchabilities this month, and Karan prepared a wonderfully grungy sketch for us to play with.

I've always loved this photo of my eldest at about 3 captured playing in my in-laws' horseshoe pitch as though it were a sandbox. I mixed 3 different Prima paper collections - the background paper and large strip are Jodie Lee's Art Journaling papers from a previous Flying Unicorn kit, and the die cut pieces behind my photo are a mixture of Lifetime and Divine - a great way to use up those scraps you can't bear to throw in the recycling bin.

Rather than start with a script patterned paper, as in the sketch, I added some textural stamping to my background in the same spots with several different stamps, then added more stamping and doodling on top of my paper layers and finished everything off with some doodling around the edges and on the petals of my fussy cut flowers.

I added in some colour thanks to some Prima chalk edgers pounced lightly on the paper, and kept my embellishments to a minimum.

I love the flowers printed on the Blue Bayou sheet from the Lifetime collection, and fussy cut a couple here, adding brad centres from the Cartographer line for a bit of dimension.

Here is the amazing sketch from Sketchabilities.  Be sure to head over to their blog and share your interpretation of this grungy sketch!

July Prima PPP

Hello Bloggers! I hope your week is going well. I'm currently sitting out on a deck by the sea enjoying the sunshine with my family, so no complaints here! I've managed to squeeze a little crafty time into our seaside vacation, and am popping in to share a card I created for the Prima Product Picks challenge this month.

I love the gorgeous red, white and blue palette this month, and paired it with one of my Bloom Girl stamps and various Prima bits and bobs from my stash to create the following card:

And here is the PPP moodboard:

I stamped the image on white Prima Textured Paper and coloured her in with Faber-Castell Aquarelle pencils. I have never coloured a dark-skinned image before, and I admit I was a little nervous about getting the shading right, but I am so happy with the way she turned out!

The background papers and the fussy cut butterflies are from the Zephyr collection - I had one sheet hoarded in my stash and lo and behold it was perfect for this palette! I paired it with a Bosque vine from the Craftsman collection, which fit perfectly because of the red and blue blooms but also provided the perfect contrast. I tucked a Bloom Girl Paper Clip in with the vine (as I believe I read on Jamie Dougherty's blog that this Bloom Girl's name is Hope).

The finishing touch is a wooden dragonfly from the Stationer's Desk Wooden Icons in a Box. I primed it with gesso, then added my details with a black Aquarelle pencil before adding colour to the body and wings with a Viva Pearl Pen and Stickles. Isn't it lovely?

Thank you so much for stopping by today, and I hope you are having a wonderful summer (or winter, for friends in the southern hemisphere).

Mojo Monday at The Flying Unicorn

Hello bloggers! It's my turn to provide inspiration for the Mojo Monday sketch challenge over on the Flying Unicorn Forums, and I've taken this week's beautiful sketch by Alda in a whimsical direction.

Disney's Frozen is a fan-favourite in our house, not only with the boys, but with Mummy, too (in fact, I think the boys, and poor long-suffering Evan, are all sick and tired of my renditions of the songs from the movie LOL), and one day while playing with clay with my boys I was inspired to pull out my own clay and craft myself an Olaf, despite the heat wave we're currently enjoying.

Here is this week's Mojo Monday sketch.

Because I was using one main focal point instead of the two in the photo, I snapped the Prima resin frame in two (easy enough to do by placing it against the corner of a desk and pushing down) and laid the two pieces on an angle inspired by the placement of the two photos.

I created my background using supplies from the July Your Passion, Your Art kit from Flying Unicorn.

I used the 13 Arts Glass Microspheres in two different ways to add texture - both on the DIY Thickers and on the background, and misted over both to bring out the dimension.

And a couple closeups of Olaf :)
